In the 25 years my father mined coal in Northern Appalachia, 1975-2000, 735 miners were killed on the job in the United States. Lying on the tract of dirt below the suspended plots of sod hung at the ceiling height of a mine, are 735 hand sewn canaries each filled, spewing coal from their seams.
