05.13.2014: Soma, Masina, Turkey, etched brass, safety pins, dirt, anthracite coal, grass, ratchet straps, birch, 10' x 8' x 6', 2014-15. In the past miners would affix a numbered tag on their person before going into the mine. Upon completing a shift the tag would be placed back on its hook in the office. This functioned as a process of record keeping but also was a means of identification in the event of a mining disaster. Inside the sculpture are 301 brass tags for the miners that did not walk out if the Soma mine on May 13, 2014. 486 tags remain on the wall for the miners that survived.
